Don’t let the old stereotype about British food fool you. Not all British foods consist of fish and chips or cucumber sandwiches. Whether you want to sip a hot tea on a lazy afternoon or partake of a five course meal at a fine restaurant, the UK has some of the most elegant restaurants and cafes in the world. By the time you have worked your way through the following seven establishments, your taste buds will be pleading for more.
1. Beauberry House
At the top of this list is undoubtedly the Beauberry House, an elegant Georgian style country home turned restaurant, located in South London. The dining room has been named the White Room, and is stunningly decorated with classic oak wood floors and white walls, complemented by a magnificent chandelier. Outdoor seating is also available, so when weather allows you can enjoy the beautiful country view while you dine on traditional English food like lamb shank with garlic mash and cauliflower puree, followed by a Lavender crème brulèè.
2. The Drawing Room
The Drawing Room is a quaintly stylish little restaurant and guesthouse tucked away in the gorgeous wilderness of Wales, overlooking the Elan Valley reservoirs. If you want peace and quiet, accompanied by fine dining, then this is the place to be. The food is all organic and locally produced, and while simple, it is expertly prepared and always rich in flavour.
3. Hipping Hall, Lancashire
Hipping Hall, located just outside Lancashire, provides guests with a relaxing atmosphere and modern feel, where they can go to enjoy the finer things in life. With a seven course tasting menu and elaborate selection of carefully selected wines, this is one dining experience you will not want to pass up.
4. The Cellar
If you are feeling adventurous and want to try something other than traditional English fare, then The Cellar, located in Scotland, is a great place to try out your sea legs. It was voted as the best UK seafood restaurant of the year in 2008, and has received a number of other awards and distinctions over the years. Try superb dishes like the omelette of creamy finnan haddock or a pesto-crusted fillet of cod with Pak Choi and mash, in a cosy candlelit environment.
5. Browns Bath
Ideally located in the city centre of Bath, Browns has it all, authentic Georgian architecture, elegant interior, amazing service, mouth-watering dishes, and even private dining rooms. You can sample unusual starters like whole baked camembert or avocado, bacon and spinach salad, or enjoy elaborate cocktails and aperitifs and the bar.
6. Stoke Rochford Hall
This spectacular Victorian mansion is located in the beautiful countryside of East Midlands Shires and caters to your every need, whether you just want a light afternoon tea or a full course lunch. It is a lovely place to spend a Sunday afternoon playing golf or strolling through the expertly landscaped gardens, followed by a delightful lunch in one of the classically decorated dining rooms.
7. The Vineyard at Stockcross
This lovely restaurant is located in Newbury, Berkshire, and is part of the Vineyard, a five-star country hotel complete with a luxurious spa. The restaurant is perfect; both for lunches or dinners, and private dining rooms are available, either for intimate dinners or loud and boisterous banquets. The menu is a mix of classic French cuisine and light Mediterranean dishes, with freshly caught fish from Cornwall and Scotland.
