For many food enthusiasts a vacation is simply an excuse to try out new exotic cuisines right from the source. Although any new destination will likely provide tourists with an opportunity to taste new foods, the following seven destinations are by far the greatest spots to experience delicious and exotic cuisines.
1. Singapore: This makes for such a spectacular foodie destination because in one concentrated area visitors can find a range of Asian specialties including Thai, Malaysian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Taiwanese. Giant dining complexes have a central seating area and dozens of restaurants so it is possible to pick and choose dishes from around the world in one central location.
2. New York City: A journey to New York City will provide food enthusiasts with everything from affordable and hearty street food to upscale dining to rival anywhere else on Earth. The best way to taste your way through the city is to visit ethnic areas for a meal of authentic favorites. Start with dim sum in the heaving Chinatown and then head to Little Italy for a traditional Italian feast at dinner.
3. London: For decades British fare has been considered sub-par by many food critics. In recent years the top chefs in London have worked hard to bring English food up to standard and even to exceed it. Try funky new takes on British classics and don’t forget to taste hearty Indian dishes which are ubiquitous on menus in London.
4. New Orleans: While New Orleans is certainly home to some spectacular cuisine, it makes the list primarily because so many dishes are not available anywhere but the Big Easy. Creole and Cajun meals fuse together French classics with Southern style and local ingredients. Try beignets at Cafe du Monde for breakfast, a traditional muffaletta for lunch while touring the French Quarter and a hearty gumbo or jambalaya before a night out on Bourbon Street.
5. Tuscany: Many Italian cities claim to be the ultimate foodie destinations. While it is certainly true that there are dozens of locations offering delicious Italian meals, Tuscany is often considered to be the ideal place to enjoy slow food cooked with organic local ingredients. Food is a way of life in Tuscany from the handmade pastas to the slow cooked sauces and grilled meats. Visit and spend a few days in the local produce markets or even take a cooking class to learn to make regional classics.
6. Hong Kong: The unique Asian city of Hong Kong manages to combine the best of East and West in one location. There are small noodle shops that offer incredible value for hearty meals as well as upscale dining establishments serving up French, Italian and Japanese specialties. Hong Kong is a great choice for those who enjoy Asian food but want to have several options for cuisine during their trip.
7. Sydney: This Australian city is not also a first choice for gastronomic enthusiasts looking to plan a foodie vacation. In recent years, however, the food has increased in caliber as more trained chefs head to the city. The food is often a combination of pan-Asian flavors fused with traditional British preparation methods.
Each of these seven destinations around the world offers extraordinary dining options for even the most discerning eaters and food critics.
