Designer Tobias Rehberger has created an inspiring and jaw-dropping design to his cafes in both Baden-Baden, Germany and Venice, Italy. The walls and floors are a seemingly endless mish-mash of black and white stripes and shapes, interspersed with bold fluorescent colours. It’s a feast for your eyes, and you’ll probably end up paying more attention to the surrounding shapes and colours than what’s on your plate. Designer Rehberger took his inspiration from visual effects used on military ships during World War 1.
Fette Sau, New York
Meat lovers eat your heart out at this carnivorous-inspired restaurant based in a trendy suburb of Brooklyn. If you’re a vegetarian it might not be the place for you, as the walls are adorned with sketches of cuts of meat, the bar stools have tractor seats and even the beer tap handles replicate butchers knives. If you like your meat, then this place is truly a design classic.
The Mestizo Restaurant, Santiago
Chile might not be the first place you automatically think of when it comes to great restaurant design, but this restaurant could set any design trend alight. Progressive and out-of-the-ordinary, the restaurant is made up of large rocks that support an over-reaching wooden shelter, stretching from the kitchen, over the restaurant indoors and onto a large patio deck. At first glance, it might be mistaken for an art gallery or even a temple, but the smell of cuisine and the clinking of cutlery at tables will reassure guests that they’ll shortly be met with all manner of culinary delights. .
Bangalore, London
This small chain of London eateries is pretty unique in that their design and layout captures the essence of Indian rail travel. It also cleverly maximises space available, allowing more diners to enjoy the experience. For example, in the Waterloo branch, booths are stacked on each other, with a pipe ladder lifting diners to the double-decker style seating. The soothing colours and angular paint design make this a pleasurable and intriguing place to dine out.
Textile Pavilion Restaurant, Luxembourg
Interesting and highly unusual, this contemporary eating establishment is housed in Luxembourg’s Museum of Modern Art. It encompasses two pavilions under a tall glass roof comprised of sound-absorbing tiles, where culture-loving diners can sit and relax and enjoy their meal in impressive surroundings.
