Breakfast: taste vs. health
Despite breakfast being the most important meal of the day, research suggests that a staggering 37% of women are not eating breakfast at home in the morning. The reasons for not doing so vary, but time constraints and an addiction to checking emails or social media were the most popular.
With that in mind, it’s essential that people realise the importance of eating breakfast. The word breakfast literally means to ‘break a fast’ overnight. By not eating anything in the mornings, people are at risk of overeating later in the day and snacking on unhealthy food.
However, this doesn’t mean that people have to resort to birdseed for breakfast. There is a misconception that if you’re going to bother eating breakfast, it has to be the healthiest option there is. That’s not strictly true, as taste and fulfilment are also important. So, if you’re trying to get into the habit of breakfast, what should you concentrate on, health or taste?
If you are conscious of your weight or simply want to ensure that you’re leading a healthy lifestyle, having breakfast is a must as it kick starts your metabolism and prevents grazing on unhealthy snacks later in the day. There are many healthy options for your brekkie, whether it’s muesli, granola, fresh fruit or a bagel, there’s bound to be something you enjoy. If you are going for an extremely healthy option, make sure you vary it from day to day to prevent boredom. Although eating well is good, if you don’t like what you’re eating at all you’ll become bored and started skipping breakfast.
In order to encourage you to eat breakfast, it’s important that it tastes good. Whether you like the idea of a couple of poached eggs and a piece of toast, a bowl of your favourite fruit and a yogurt or one of many the delicious cereals on the shelves, the fact of the matter is that any breakfast is better than none at all. You can also try whipping up a sumptuous smoothie using muesli, milk, honey and fresh fruit.
While there are so many obvious benefits to eating a healthy breakfast every single day, a bland meal isn’t going to do anything to persuade people to put down their smartphone and start eating. Due to the importance of getting a meal in the morning, it is better that people eat something they enjoy for breakfast, rather than concentrating on it being overly healthy.
