Bad News for Marmalade

Hope that Paddington bear isn’t reading the news – it’s not good on the marmalade front – sales are down.  The grocer, the food industry magazine, has confirmed a long running trend and last year we ate 2.5 million fewer standard jars of marmalade than we did the previous year. Source BBC audio

Suggestions as to why range from aggressive marketing from other breakfast spreads to an increase in home made marmalade which is difficult to measure.

Home made marmalade

You can make your own quite easily any time of year using prepared oranges. These come ready shredded in tins, in various thicknesses and taste combinations, and you can vary the tase with ginger or whatever.

However many people take this time of year (January/February) to buy fresh seville oranges and make their own marmalade – using only a few ingredients it is relatively easy to turn bitter Seville oragnes in to delicious home made marmalade.
