Most things we eat are great for the body and healthy. But some of them have a bizarre side effect at the least. From triggering drug overdose to making you hallucinate, some of these items and foods are best taken in moderation.

In this article, we have attempted to find these foods, fruits and items and compile them for you. That way, you get to choose what to eat and when to eat it. Most importantly, you get to be aware of the side effects. That way, you don’t get surprised when they happen.

Carrots and Tomatoes

Carrots and tomatoes are fruits with high health content. Rich in carotenoids, these are both strong antioxidants capable of eliminating free radicals and toxins from the body. Used to make fruit juice and salads, they are healthy fruits that everyone needs to take.

Tomatoes for instance contain lycopene and carrots contain beta carotenoid compounds, both of which are known cancer fighting compounds. But, when taken excessively – like 8 carrot sticks or 5-10 tomatoes a day – can cause an orange skin discolouration.

If you’re a big fan of asparagus, you may have noticed that your pee has a distinctive smell within hours of eating it. This is as a result of the sulphur compound mercaptan found in asparagus. You’ll also find this in garlic, onions and skink secretions and rotten eggs. So, if you don’t really care for the smell, you may want to cut back on your intake of the vegetable.

Who knew grapefruit could hurt you? They are a well known source of antioxidants. They help eliminate free radicals and even cholesterol levels. So, what’s the problem? Taking grapefruits immediately after or before taking certain medications can cause you to overdose on the drug. This is because it prevents the breakdown of drugs by blocking those enzymes responsible for drug absorption and breakdown. The result therefore, can be fatal.

In case you haven’t noticed, coffee kind of makes the world go round. It’s partly responsible for over 60% of the workforce’s mental stimulation and productivity during working hours. Thing is when you indulge in it too much, you start getting reactions like increased heart rate, sensitivity to noises, easy distraction, increased bowel movements -which is not necessarily a bad thing- and the worst part, auditory hallucination. People who drink more than 5 cups of coffee a day are more likely to “hear” what isn’t there. Weird, huh?

All Things Soy

Okay, you know how you were told that soybean, soy oil or soymilk –and other variants- is healthy for you? Research has shown that men who consistently indulge in anything containing soy have lesser chances of being fertile. That’s because they produce less sperm cells than men who don’t take it at all. That’s about 41 million swimmers per ml less than the standard 60+ million swimmers per ml. Who’d have thought! But, it’s the truth. So, if you’re already having low sperm counts and habitually take soymilk, you may need to rethink that habit.
